About

Toshiharu Yamanishi is a Japanese composer born in 1971, known for his work on shoot-'em-up soundtracks and the Atelier series. He debuted with Thunder Force III at Technosoft in 1990, moved to Gust in 1995, and composed roughly half of Atelier Marie's original soundtrack. He also goes by the alias 'Funky Surounin.'

History

Toshiharu Yamanishi was born in 1971 in Japan. By the time he joined Technosoft around 1990, the company had already established itself as a specialist in shoot-'em-up games for the Mega Drive and PC Engine. Thunder Force III was his debut. Technosoft assigned him to compose roughly half of the soundtrack alongside Naosuke Arai and Tomomi Ohtani. For a newcomer, it was a test of whether he could match the intensity and speed that defined the genre. He passed.

Thunder Force III released in 1990 to strong reviews. The soundtrack was aggressive, layered, and tightly synchronized to the on-screen action. Yamanishi's work helped establish the series' musical identity — driving percussion, escalating melodies, and a relentless forward momentum that matched the player's experience. He returned for Thunder Force IV in 1992, collaborating with Takeshi Yoshida. That soundtrack is still regarded as one of the finest in the shoot-'em-up genre, and Yamanishi's contributions were central to its success.

In 1995, Yamanishi left Technosoft and joined Gust, a smaller developer focused on role-playing games. The shift was abrupt — from the adrenaline-driven battlefields of Thunder Force to the quieter, more domestic world of Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg. Released in 1997, Atelier Marie was a game about a young alchemist trying to graduate from magic school by crafting items in her workshop. Yamanishi composed roughly half of the original soundtrack. The music was warm, repetitive in a comforting way, and designed to accompany hours of crafting and exploration without becoming intrusive.

His most enduring contribution to the Atelier series was a track titled 'I'm Working Right Now!' It became the musical signature of the Salburg sub-series and appeared in subsequent Atelier games as a recurring theme. The melody was simple and upbeat, built to loop endlessly without wearing out its welcome. It was the opposite of Thunder Force — no explosions, no urgency, just the sound of someone focused on their work. That range — from war to workshops — defined Yamanishi's career.

Around 2009, Yamanishi's activity in the game industry diminished. His online presence became sporadic. There is no clear record of a formal retirement announcement, and no widely reported reason for his withdrawal. He simply stopped appearing in credits. For composers who work under contract or as freelancers, this kind of quiet exit is not unusual. The work ends when the calls stop coming, or when the composer decides not to answer.

What remains is the music itself. Thunder Force III and IV are still circulated among fans of the genre. Atelier Marie's soundtrack, including 'I'm Working Right Now!', is still available and still listened to. Yamanishi's career spanned fewer than fifteen active years, but the range of what he produced — from shoot-'em-up intensity to role-playing game warmth — is a reminder that a composer's identity is not found in a single genre. It is found in the ability to hear what a game is asking for and to answer it clearly.
