Aspic is a game that tried to hold three different worlds in one cartridge: an overhead overworld, first-person dungeons, and side-scrolling action battles. The structure was genuinely ambitious — a hybrid that predated games which would later popularize similar combinations. Developed by Xtalsoft and published by Bothtec, Aspic originated as a Japanese home computer game in 1986 before being ported to the Famicom Disk System in 1988. The reception was mixed: the overworld scrolled painfully slowly, battles offered almost no challenge, and a save-anywhere feature inadvertently drained any tension from the experience. And yet the shape of Aspic's ambition is still legible. Someone looked at the limited vocabulary of late-1980s RPGs and tried to speak three languages at once.
