The King of Fighters '96

ザ・キング・オブ・ファイターズ'96

Japan: July 30, 1996 · Dev: SNK

Updated:

They redrew everything — and time still took half of it back.

SNK threw out the sprites from the year before and redrew every character from scratch — smoother, better, because they wanted it that way. But SNK also shipped a new King of Fighters every year, and the calendar does not wait. Many of the finished sprites never made it into the game; they sit unused in the data, complete but unseen. Chizuru Kagura's pixel art had to be finished in a month. Her designer worked until six in the morning. Director Masanori Kuwasashi stepped down after this one. The pressure of the annual schedule, he said. Look at KOF '96 again with that in mind, and those sprites stop looking like 'finished.' They start looking like 'as far as we got.'

About this game

The King of Fighters '96 is a 2D fighting game released by SNK for Neo Geo arcade (MVS) and home console (AES) in 1996. The third installment in the King of Fighters series, it underwent a major graphical overhaul from previous entries, introducing smoother animations and redesigned character sprites. The game features team-based 3-on-3 battles with a roster that includes series regulars and new characters like Chizuru Kagura. Known for its refined gameplay mechanics and competitive balance, KOF '96 became a staple in the fighting game community and remains a key entry in the series.

The Story Behind

The King of Fighters '96 was released by SNK for Neo Geo arcade (MVS) on July 30, 1996, with home console (AES) and Neo Geo CD versions following in September and October. Directed by Masanori Kuwasashi, the game underwent a major graphical overhaul from the previous entry, though development was rushed to meet the annual release schedule. The pressure of yearly installments led Kuwasashi to leave the director role after this title. The sub-boss character Chizuru Kagura's pixel art was completed in a month, resulting in significant overtime for her designer.

Tricks & Tales

KOF '96's rushed development resulted in many unused sprites left in the game data. A team of six or more composers contributed to the soundtrack. The game marked the last directorial work of Masanori Kuwasashi, who cited pressure from the annual release schedule. Neo Geo MVS and AES cartridges are region-free, meaning Japanese, US, and European cartridges work on any Neo Geo hardware regardless of region.

Region & Compatibility

The Neo Geo AES has regional variants (Japan and international / English) but is notably more region-tolerant than most consoles of its era. Many AES cartridges contain both Japanese and English text and will display the appropriate language based on a DIP switch setting on the console. The Japanese and international versions of most games are functionally identical; some late-era games have minor content differences. The MVS system also uses DIP switches for region and language configuration, and this carries over to the AES architecture. Collectors who prefer the Japanese text of the original releases should note that importing a Japanese AES requires no voltage conversion for European users but does require a step-down converter for North American 120V outlets.

Maintenance Tips

The Neo Geo AES uses a 3.6V lithium battery to retain game saves and settings. After thirty-plus years, virtually all unserviced AES units have a dead or dying save battery. Symptoms are lost high scores, reset date/time, and in rare cases settings corruption. The battery is a standard CR2032 or similar coin cell, accessible by removing the rear panel — replacement is a simple swap rather than soldering on most units. The edge connector that receives cartridges can develop oxidation over thirty years; cleaning the cartridge PCB contacts and the console's cartridge slot with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab restores reliable contact. The cartridge PCB contacts are gold-plated on most AES cartridges and resist oxidation well, but the connector can accumulate dust and debris that causes intermittent recognition failures before genuine oxidation sets in.

What to Watch Out For

Before buying, these are the points worth knowing — from someone who handles original Japanese The King of Fighters '96 copies regularly.

Will a Japanese King of Fighters '96 cartridge work on a US or European Neo Geo console?

Yes. Neo Geo cartridges are region-free — Japanese, US, and European cartridges work on any Neo Geo hardware regardless of region. The BIOS determines the language and region settings, but the cartridge itself has no region lock.

How should I clean and maintain a Neo Geo cartridge?

Clean the edge connector contacts with 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab or pencil eraser. Use compressed air to clear dust from the cartridge slot. Never apply conductive lubricants to the contacts — they cause voltage leakage and can damage the board. Neo Geo MVS cartridges use a CR2032 battery for save data, which should be replaced every 3–5 years. When the battery dies, saved data is lost, so back up anything important before replacing it.
