Buying a Super Cassette Vision — A Practical Guide

Two Epoch machines share most of a name and share nothing else.

Three objects, one family name

Epoch sold three home consoles between 1981 and 1984, and listings treat all three as if they were versions of the same thing. They are not versions of anything. Before you look at condition, price, or completeness, settle which object is in the photograph.

A smaller, cheaper body released four days after the Famicom went on sale. It plays eight of the eleven games. Epoch cut the volume dial to save cost, and the three titles that depend on it — the two baseball games and Big Sports 12 — do not run here. Sellers often describe a Jr. simply as "Cassette Vision", which is fair enough, though the two look nothing alike.

A different machine with a real processor of its own, thirty games, and no way to read anything made for 1981. This is the one most people mean when they say Super Cassette Vision, and it is the one this guide is about.

A tidy lot of "Cassette Vision games" attached to a Super Cassette Vision is two unrelated purchases photographed together, and the games will do nothing. Ask the seller to name the machine and to show one cartridge label clearly. Both requests take a minute and settle the question completely.

Epoch asked its own owners to start again from zero in 1984, at the moment Nintendo was offering them a library that grew every month. Forty years later the two Epoch systems still circulate as separate collections, priced separately, with separate spare parts.

Thirty games is the whole world

Software for the Super Cassette Vision stopped in 1987 at thirty Japanese titles. France had its own run of releases through Yeno, which distributed the machine there, including titles sold in that market alone. Add them and you are still counting to a number you could hold in your head.

For a buyer this cuts two ways. A complete set is genuinely achievable here, which is rare and is much of the appeal: you can finish this collection in a way you will never finish a Famicom shelf. The same fact sets a ceiling. The machine will never surprise you with a thirty-first game, so if you are buying in the hope of a long discovery, this is the wrong console and the disappointment will arrive after the parcel does.

One consequence for pricing: with a library this small, individual titles can be scarce simply because few were pressed, and a seller with one of those has no comparable sale to point at. Ask what they are basing the number on.

The adapter is usually gone

On the 1981 machine the AC adapter was a separate purchase, and forty-five years later it is frequently absent from the box. The temptation is obvious: the plug looks generic, a drawer full of old adapters is right there, and one of them will physically fit. Resist it. Guessing at voltage or polarity on a machine this age can turn a working console into a repair job in the moment the power reaches the board, and nothing about the outside of the socket tells you which guess is safe.

There is a further trap inside the family. Japanese collectors who have documented their own machines report the Super Cassette Vision running on 9V with a centre-negative plug, while the 1981 Cassette Vision was a 6V machine. Two consoles that look like relatives, sold by the same company three years apart, want different power. These figures come from collectors' documentation, and no manufacturer's specification sheet is in front of us, so read them as a reason to check: confirm against the markings on your own unit and its own adapter before anything is switched on.

The practical route is short. Prefer a machine that still has its own supply, and treat that supply as part of the object itself. Where it is missing, have the correct specification confirmed for your particular unit before the first power-on, and budget for it.

The three faults that turn up

These are simple machines from the early 1980s and they age where simple machines from the early 1980s age: at the power section and at the contacts. Descriptions of the power section as the usual starting point come from repairers who have opened these consoles and written it up themselves, so read them as first-hand accounts. Epoch stopped supporting this hardware decades ago, and there is no service bulletin left to check them against.

One design decision raises the stakes on all of them. The controllers are wired to the console and do not unplug, so a worn pad is a console problem here, and it cannot be solved by buying a spare. People who have opened these machines also mention screw posts inside the shell going brittle with age. Ask for a photograph of the pads and a word about how they feel, and when a listing says "controller a bit stiff", read it as a repair quote.

  • Leaking capacitors in the power section common

    It will not power on, or the picture rolls and breaks up.

    Electrolytic capacitors from the mid-1980s dry out and leak. Repairers who have opened these machines report the power section as the usual place it starts.

  • Dirty cartridge and edge contacts common

    A game will not start, or the screen fills with garbage.

    Forty years of oxide on the contacts. On the 1981 machine this matters twice as much, because the cartridge is not carrying data alone. It is carrying the processor.

  • A missing or wrong power supply occasional

    Nothing happens, or something worse happens.

    The AC adapter was sold separately on the 1981 machine and is often long gone. Do not guess at a replacement.

On the 1981 machine, the cartridge is the computer

Epoch and NEC left the first console almost hollow. The processing lived in a single-chip microcontroller sealed inside every game — NEC's μPD777C and μPD778C — so changing the cartridge changed the machine's brain. It was a sensible answer to a real problem of the period, when running a processor and an external ROM across a bus invited noise and misbehaviour, and it kept the console cheap and stable.

It also changes how you read a listing. "Console tested" carries less information here than on almost any other system, because on the 1981 machine much of what could fail is sitting in the cartridges, and each cartridge fails on its own. A dirty contact is a dirty processor connection. Ask for each cartridge to be tried, one at a time, and for a photograph of the contacts. Forty years of oxide is normal and cleanable; a cracked or corroded contact strip is neither.

The Super Cassette Vision moved the processor into the console, so this particular warning is really about the 1981 side of the family. It stays on this page because the two machines arrive in the same lots, from the same households, listed by the same sellers.

The Ladies Set is real, and its story is not established

A Super Cassette Vision in magenta and translucent pink, packed in a pink carrying case and sold as a set aimed at girls, exists. Japanese collectors and dealers have recorded it independently, and owners still surface with one.

What we cannot tell you is the part a price depends on: when it went on sale, what it cost, how many were made, and which game came in the case. None of it has been established from a primary source. So the machine is real, and almost everything a seller might tell you about it is not yet verifiable. Buy the object, not the story attached to it. If a listing prices one of these as a documented limited edition with a production figure attached, ask where the figure comes from — a seller who says "nobody really knows" is being straight with you.

The French machine

The Super Cassette Vision reached France in 1984 through Yeno, and the French run included software made for that market alone. If a machine turns up in Europe with paperwork in French, that is where it came from, and it is a perfectly real Super Cassette Vision with a different name on the shell.

Two things follow. First, ask which one you are being offered. The French machine was built for a 220V supply and a PAL television, and arrived with a SCART lead for a French set; the Japanese machine expects Japan's 100V and its own broadcast standard. Which one is in the box decides what else you need before anything appears on screen, and it is a one-line question. Second, the French-only titles turn "complete" into a question whose answer depends on which country you count — worth knowing before you set yourself that target.

Before you commit

  • Which machine — the 1981 Cassette Vision, the 1983 Jr., or the 1984 Super — stated in writing by the seller
  • The cartridges in the photos match that machine (Super carts do not run on the 1981 console, and the reverse is equally true)
  • A power supply is included, or you have a repairer who will confirm the correct one before you plug anything in
  • A photo of the machine switched on, with a game running and the picture steady
  • Both controllers tried in every direction — they are wired to the console and cannot be swapped out
  • Every cartridge in the lot tested individually, not "console tested, carts untested"
  • Cartridge contacts and the console slot photographed — look for green or grey oxide
  • If it is described as the pink Ladies Set, you have asked the seller what their source is for the price and the edition
  • If you are buying inside Europe, you have asked whether it is a Japanese Epoch machine or a French Yeno one
  • Shipping, declared value, and your own country's current import rules checked before you order

One number deserves its condition stated out loud, because listings lean on it. The 1981 Cassette Vision did lead its market, holding roughly seventy per cent of it among consoles that took interchangeable cartridges. Nintendo's Color TV-Game machines, which played only what was built into them, sold about three million in the same era. "Japan's best-selling console" is a claim that survives only with the cartridge condition attached, and a price built on the claim without the condition is a price built on air.

Around 300,000 Super Cassette Visions were made over the whole production run, and the survivors reach the market in three broad states: a bare console with no supply, a working console with its adapter, and a boxed machine with the case and papers intact. Individual cartridges from a thirty-title library move on their own logic, and a tested cartridge is worth more than an untested one by more than the testing costs.
