How to clean a GameCube disc

Wipe from the centre hole straight out to the edge. Never in a circle. A dry microfibre cloth handles most of it; distilled water for what is left; isopropyl alcohol only for grease, and only on the clear side. The direction you wipe matters more than what you wipe with.

Why the direction is the whole answer

The data on a GameCube disc is written as one continuous spiral. It starts near the centre hole and winds outward, going round many thousands of times. The laser follows that single track the way a record needle follows its groove.

The disc also carries extra error-correction data, so the console can rebuild a short gap. A scratch that curves along the spiral stays on the track for a long stretch. It takes out more data in one place than the error correction can rebuild, and the game freezes or will not load.

A scratch that runs from the centre out to the rim crosses each lap at right angles. It takes only a tiny piece from each lap, and the console rebuilds those pieces without the game ever noticing.

Even a soft cloth can leave faint marks. Wipe from the centre to the edge, and any marks you leave will be the kind the console can cope with. That is why you never wipe in circles.

The steps

  1. Look at the disc in a bright light first

    Tilt the disc under a bright light so the light skims across the shiny side, and see what kind of marks it has. Smudges and haze wipe off. Scratches do not. The scratch that actually stops a game from loading is one that curves around the disc, following the track. Knowing which you have tells you whether cleaning will help at all.

  2. Wipe dry first, from the centre straight out to the edge

    Use a clean, dry microfibre cloth. Lay the disc shiny-side up, start at the hole in the middle, and pull the cloth outward in a straight line to the rim. Lift, turn the disc a little, repeat. Never wipe in circles. Most fingerprints and dust come off with nothing but a dry cloth.

  3. If it is still dirty, add a little distilled water

    Dampen the cloth with distilled water — do not soak it — and wipe again in the same straight strokes. Use distilled water, because tap water dries leaving mineral spots exactly where you were cleaning. Dry the disc with a second clean cloth, the same way.

  4. For grease or sticky residue, use isopropyl alcohol on the shiny side only

    Isopropyl alcohol (70–99%) on a cloth, applied to the clear plastic reading side, will lift grease and old adhesive that water will not. Apply it to the cloth, not to the disc. Keep it off the printed label side, which is ink on a lacquer and can be lifted or clouded by solvent.

  5. Let it dry completely before you put it in the console

    A GameCube disc spins fast and close to the laser. Any liquid still on it is thrown off inside the machine. Give it a minute, look at it in the light again, and only then load it.

What will destroy the disc

  • Paper towels and tissues. Wood fibre is rough enough to scratch the disc. You would trade dust for a field of fine scratches.
  • Circular polishing. Every pass follows the track. See above.
  • Toothpaste, metal polish, abrasive compounds. These grind the plastic away until the scratch is gone. They often leave a haze that the laser reads worse than the scratch. Keep them for a disc you would otherwise throw away.
  • Solvent on the printed side. The label is ink on lacquer. Keep the alcohol on the clear side.
  • Loading it wet. The disc spins fast and close to the laser. Let it dry.

When the disc is not the problem

Sometimes a clean disc still will not load. If several clean discs fail the same way — the disc spins up, then a read error appears — the disc is not the problem. The fault is inside the console.

In our shop in Japan, the fault we find most often in a GameCube is the laser. Its output has grown too weak to read the disc. A weak laser reads some discs, refuses others, and gets worse over time. Cleaning will not bring it back. The next most common fault is failed capacitors inside the console.

If your GameCube came from Japan, check the power as well. The console runs on 12 volts DC from a small AC adapter. The adapter is the part that plugs into the wall, and it is built for one country's outlets. A Japanese adapter is built for Japan's 100 volts. North American outlets supply 120. The gap looks small, but in our experience a Japanese GameCube on its Japanese adapter misbehaves at 120 volts. Sometimes it shows an error straight away. Sometimes it seems to work, and nobody notices anything is wrong. That second case is the dangerous one: a console used like this can be damaged. So an error on the first day is the better outcome. Run the adapter through a step-down transformer to 100 volts, or use a North American adapter.

A dirty laser lens gives the same symptom as a weak laser. Unlike a weak laser, a dirty lens is something you can fix at home.
