Hiroyuki Ito graduated from Tokyo Zokei University's Faculty of Design and joined Square in 1987. His first work was not what the credits called design. He debugged. He worked on sound effects. He handled whatever needed handling while the company built games around him. That was the entry. There was no promise it would lead anywhere.
In 1990, the company assigned him as battle designer for Final Fantasy IV, the fourth game in a series that had grown large enough to matter. The role meant designing the system through which players would spend most of their time: the rules that governed every fight. The standard for role-playing games was turn-based combat — player selects action, enemy acts, player acts, repeat. It worked. It had worked for years. But it also stopped. Every decision paused the world.
Ito had a hobby unrelated to his job. He watched Formula 1 racing. He liked watching the cars move around the track at different speeds, the slower ones being lapped by the faster. A fast car could complete two laps while a slower car finished one. The difference was visible, measurable, and continuous. The race never paused for anyone to choose what to do next.
He brought that idea into Final Fantasy IV. Instead of rigid turn order, each character and enemy would have a speed value. A hidden timer would fill at different rates depending on that speed. When a character's timer filled, that character could act — not because it was 'their turn,' but because they were ready. A fast character could attack twice before a slow one acted once. The battles kept moving. The system was called Active Time Battle.
The ATB system appeared first in Final Fantasy IV, released in July 1991 for the Super Famicom. It became the foundation of the series. Final Fantasy V in 1992, Final Fantasy VI in 1994, Final Fantasy VII in 1997, Final Fantasy VIII in 1999, Final Fantasy IX in 2000 — each used a variation of the same core. Square filed for and received a patent on the system. What Ito had designed by watching cars on a screen became the way millions of players understood how time worked inside a battle.
Ito's work did not stop at combat systems. He directed Final Fantasy VI, widely regarded as one of the strongest entries in the series. He directed Final Fantasy IX, a game built around the idea of returning to the series' roots while carrying forward everything the team had learned. In 2006, he directed Final Fantasy XII, which pushed the ATB concept further — battles took place directly in the world with no separate screen, and players could program character behavior in advance through a system called Gambits. The line from watching a race to building worlds that never stopped moving was direct.
There are designers whose names appear on every discussion of their work, and there are designers whose systems speak louder than their interviews. Ito belongs to the second group. He was not often quoted. He did not give keynote speeches. The interviews that exist show someone who thought in terms of mechanics and integration — a person who saw a race and thought about rhythm, who built systems and then trusted them to hold the weight of a hundred-hour story.
What he built is still there. Every modern game that lets a fast character act more often than a slow one, every battle where time does not stop while you decide — those are echoes of a man who watched cars lap each other and thought: this could be a fight.
