About this game
Released in December 1995, Dragon Quest VI was the series' swan song on the Super Famicom and its most ambitious chapter yet. A dual-world narrative contrasting the real world with a dream world challenged players to uncover a mystery spanning both dimensions. Selling over three million copies in Japan and becoming the best-selling game of 1995, it was a national cultural moment — the last great Dragon Quest before the leap to PlayStation.
Key Features
Dual-world exploration alternating between the real world and the dream world, a class/vocation system allowing characters to master multiple jobs, and a large party of distinctive characters. The game introduced the Slime mechanic as a recruitable companion.
The Story Behind
Dragon Quest VI arrived in a year when the PlayStation was already reshaping the industry. Its Super Famicom release was a statement of loyalty to the existing fanbase — and a farewell to the 16-bit era. The series would not return until Dragon Quest VII on PlayStation in 2000.
Tricks & Tales
Dragon Quest VI was developed by Heartbeat, not the original Chunsoft team that had worked on earlier entries. Koichi Sugiyama's score introduced several beloved new pieces while preserving the orchestral Dragon Quest sound he had established over a decade.
