About this game

Ultraman Powered for the 3DO, developed by Tose and published by Bandai on March 20, 1994, is a fighting game based on the 1993 US-produced TV series Ultraman: The Ultimate Hero.

The Story Behind

Released on March 20, 1994, as a launch title for the 3DO in Japan, Ultraman Powered was developed by Tose and published by Bandai. The game was based on the 1993 television series Ultraman: The Ultimate Hero (known as Ultraman Powered in Japan), a tokusatsu show co-produced by Major Havoc Entertainment and Tsuburaya Productions in the United States. Despite being an American production, the series never aired in the United States; it was released on home video in Japan from December 1993 and later broadcast on TBS from April to July 1995. The 3DO game used digitized sprites and FMV cutscenes from the live-action series, following the digitized-fighter style popularized by Mortal Kombat.

Tricks & Tales

The game combines 2D fighting sequences with 3D rail shooter sections where the player pilots a ship to weaken monsters before Ultraman finishes them. Gameplay uses digitized backgrounds and character sprites from the TV series. The show it was based on — Ultraman: The Ultimate Hero — ran for only 13 episodes and was produced in the United States but never broadcast there, making the game one of the few adaptations of an American tokusatsu production that was released exclusively in Japan.
