About this game

AutoBahn Tokio is a Japan-exclusive racing game for the 3DO, released on December 22, 1995. Players select from four cars and race against one CPU opponent across three tracks — a city at night, a coastal highway, and a forest track — hitting checkpoints in the quickest time possible. Both automatic and manual transmission options are available.

The Story Behind

AutoBahn Tokio was released at a time when the 3DO was in need of 3D racing titles. Developed by Sinai Enterprise (also known as Sanyei Shobou) and published by Matsushita in Japan only, it offered a simple racing experience with a city night course, a coastal highway, and a forest track. Despite being a Japan-exclusive release, all in-game menus and text were displayed in English. The game carried the product code FZ-SJ7801. Contemporary reviewers noted it as a "bare bones" release that felt closer to a technical demonstration than a full retail product, particularly when compared to competing titles like Need for Speed.

Tricks & Tales

The game was released on December 22, 1995, exclusively for the Japanese market, yet all in-game text and menus are in English. Players could select from four unnamed cars loosely based on real car models, but there was no option to tune the cars or race against a second player. The game featured both automatic and manual transmission modes. The 3D engine suffered from noticeable pop-up and texture deformation issues, with a limited draw distance that stood out even by 1995 standards. The game's background music was widely criticized, leading many players to disable the audio entirely.
