Two systems in one chassis

Nintendo released the Family Computer in Japan on July 15, 1983 for 14,800 yen. To expand memory capacity and offer rewritable software, it launched the Famicom Disk System on February 21, 1986 for 15,000 yen. Players who bought both standalone units spent 29,800 yen and managed two separate power supplies, interconnecting cables, and a RAM Adapter inserted into the top cartridge slot.

On July 1, 1986, Sharp Corporation released an officially licensed alternative: the Sharp Twin Famicom for 32,000 yen. The machine integrated both the standard 60-pin cartridge slot and the Disk System drive into a single housing, powered by a single AC adapter. Masayuki Uemura, the engineer who designed the Famicom for Nintendo, worked on solar-cell technology at Sharp Corporation before joining Nintendo.

Composite video, seven years early

Video output marks the primary engineering difference between the two. The original Famicom, model HVC-001, output video exclusively through an RF modulator tuned to Japanese television channels. Connecting an unmodified original Famicom to a modern television often results in visual noise or display incompatibility.

Sharp built composite AV output directly into the Twin Famicom, tapping the Picture Processing Unit signal path to send clean video and accurate colours through standard RCA jacks. Nintendo did not offer composite output on a Famicom of its own until December 1993, when it released the AV Famicom, model HVC-101 — seven years and five months after the Twin Famicom reached Japanese retail stores.

What the Twin Famicom did not change

Despite the integrated housing, the underlying compatibility is unchanged. The top-loading 60-pin slot accepts standard Japanese Famicom cartridges. The front-loading drive accepts the 112 KB Quick Disk media used by the Disk System. A selector switch on the top panel toggles power between the cartridge slot and the disk drive.

Both controllers remain hardwired directly to the console chassis. They tuck into channels on the sides of the case. Sharp produced no exclusive games for the Twin Famicom — the console’s entire library is the existing cartridge and Disk System catalogue.

Four colourways, two revisions

Sharp manufactured the Twin Famicom across two hardware revisions and four colour schemes. The initial AN-500 model, introduced on July 1, 1986, came in two options: a red housing with black trim (AN-500R) and a black housing with red trim (AN-500B). These original units had standard control pads without rapid-fire switches, and no power indicator light.

In 1987, Sharp released the updated AN-505 revision in two new schemes: black with green accents (AN-505-BK) and red with beige accents (AN-505-RD). The AN-505 added independent rapid-fire turbo switches to the A and B buttons on both controllers, and a red power LED on the front panel.

Why the disk side still matters

Access to the Disk System library brings advantages beyond cartridge sizes. Disk Card media let players save progress directly to magnetic media without passwords. The internal RAM Adapter hardware also houses the RP2C33 audio chip.

That chip provides a sixth sound channel — a 64-step wavetable synthesis generator — alongside the Famicom’s standard five. Composers used it for soft, rounded tones. The opening harp figure of the dungeon theme in The Legend of Zelda relies entirely on this extra channel.

Inspect the drive belt first. The rubber belt inside the Disk System drive mechanism deteriorates through hydrolysis: the rubber stretches, hardens, or turns sticky, and disks stop loading. Ask the seller whether the belt has been replaced and verified with working disk software.

Then confirm the seller tested the composite RCA output on an actual screen rather than relying on a power light — long-term storage oxidises output jacks. Check the underside label for the exact revision if rapid-fire switches or a power LED matter to you. The power adapter is rated for Japan’s 100V AC standard, so outside Japan you will want a step-down transformer. Finally, verify the listing includes the original or a compatible AC adapter and an RCA video cable alongside the hardwired controllers.
