A jump sound is eight bytes of memory. A collision is four. An item pickup is six. Add them all together, and you have maybe sixty bytes for the entire sonic vocabulary of a world that has to feel alive. That was the job. Make Sega sound like Sega. In 1992, Tatsuyuki Maeda, twenty-four years old and fresh out of electric organ training, sat down at a desk in Sega of Japan and began filling those bytes.
His first project was a game called Devi & Pii, worked on alongside a colleague named Chikako Kamatani. The game never shipped. No one outside Sega ever saw it. Maeda stayed anyway. Because while that first title disappeared, the sounds he created for it did not. They went into the library. The library was the real product.
Sound effects are the most invisible part of game design. A composer gets liner notes. A sprite artist gets screenshots in magazines. But the person who decides what a ring sounds like when Sonic picks it up? That work lives in the gap between noticing and not noticing. If you hear it, it is only because something went wrong. If it works, it disappears into the world as grammar — the punctuation that makes a sentence readable without ever being the sentence itself.
Maeda understood this. Alongside composer Masaru Setsumaru, he spent the early 1990s building Sega's sonic infrastructure. Not the music. The other sounds. The bleeps when a menu cursor moves. The chime when a life is earned. The tiny explosion when an enemy dies. Each sound had to carry meaning in a fraction of a second, using a fraction of the hardware's capacity, and still feel like it belonged to the same world as every other sound Sega had ever made. It was building with constraints so tight that most people would call it impossible. Maeda called it a job.
The Sega Genesis sound chip could produce exactly three square waves, one noise channel, and one FM synthesis slot that everyone fought over because it was the only one that could hold melody. Sound effects lived in the cracks — the leftover memory, the unused channels, the tenth of a second between beats when the music paused. Maeda learned to hear those cracks. He learned to make a jump sound that felt bouncy using a waveform that had no roundness. He learned to make a coin sound precious using a chip that had no concept of shimmer. He became fluent in a language no human being naturally speaks.
This work had no spotlight. Sonic 3 & Knuckles shipped in 1994, and the music was praised. Maeda had worked on that too — not just the composition, but the hundreds of micro-sounds that made each action feel tactile. No review mentioned it. Dragon Force released in 1996 with an orchestral-scale soundtrack that critics called ambitious. Maeda had built the sound effects for that game as well. Not one article gave his name. That was the trade. You could build the grammar of a hundred worlds, and the world would never know you were there.
But Sega knew. And Maeda kept working. Because the people who play games do not need to know who made the sound of a menu selection in order to feel, in their bones, that the menu is responding to them. They do not need to credit the blip that signals a successful attack in order to trust that their input mattered. The work was invisible by design. It had to be. If a jump sound made you stop and think, 'That is a jump sound,' then it had failed. The job was to make the sound so natural that it felt like it had always been there, waiting.
Maeda would go on to compose full soundtracks — Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Superstars, dozens of others over thirty years. But before any of that, he spent four years making sounds that no one would ever consciously hear. He filled the library. He built the grammar. And every time someone picked up a Sega controller in the 1990s and felt the world respond to them, they were hearing his work. They just did not know it. That was the point. The best sound effect is the one you never notice — until it is gone, and the silence tells you something was missing all along.
