About this game
Released in 1994, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 introduced Knuckles the Echidna and a new shield system that fundamentally expanded the series' gameplay vocabulary. Designed to connect directly with Sonic & Knuckles via a lock-on cartridge, it was half of what the creators considered a complete experience. Behind the scenes, the game carries one of gaming's most enduring mysteries: Michael Jackson reportedly composed several tracks, but his name was removed from the credits before release.
Key Features
Three distinct shields (fire, water, electric) with unique elemental abilities, the ability to save progress mid-game for the first time in the series, Knuckles as both rival and later playable character (in Sonic & Knuckles), and a more interconnected stage design with hidden paths.
The Story Behind
Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles together formed what Sega's team considered a single game split across two cartridges due to development time constraints. The lock-on technology was Sega's solution to deliver the complete vision. Together, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is widely considered the peak of the classic 2D Sonic series.
Tricks & Tales
Michael Jackson was reported to have composed several tracks for the game, a claim later confirmed by his keyboardist Brad Buxer and by Sonic producer Yuji Naka. Jackson's name was reportedly removed from the credits before release. Some speculate this was related to the 1993 allegations against him; no official statement has ever confirmed the reason.
