About this game
Released in Japan on December 9, 1994, The Story of Thor (Beyond Oasis in North America) is an action RPG developed by Ancient and published by Sega. Prince Ali discovers a golden armlet that summons elemental spirits — Dytto the water fairy, Efreet the fire spirit, Bow the nature spirit, and Shade the shadow spirit — and must recover a second armlet to prevent a dark sorcerer from enslaving the land. Developed by Yuzo Koshiro's Ancient studio, the game is celebrated for its kinetic action, exquisite animations, and a soundtrack that demonstrated the Mega Drive's FM synthesis capabilities at their absolute peak.
Key Features
Four elemental spirits are summoned by touching corresponding elements in the environment — water pools, fire sources, plants, shadows — and each has distinct attack patterns and utility. Ali moves fluidly with a short sword, and combat is real-time and physical. Shops sell upgrades, towns provide story context. Unlike most action RPGs of the era, there is no random encounter system — all enemies are visible and engaged in real-time. The game rewards exploration: secret rooms hide powerful items and upgrades that dramatically change how Ali fights.
The Story Behind
Beyond Oasis arrived in 1994 as the Mega Drive was approaching the end of its commercial life in Japan. Ancient's Yuzo Koshiro had already cemented his reputation with Streets of Rage 2's soundtrack; this game was a demonstration that the Mega Drive could host a lavish, console-length RPG adventure without sacrificing action fluidity. The FM synthesis soundtrack — composed without PCM samples — became a reference point for what the Genesis/Mega Drive sound chip could achieve in skilled hands. The game has maintained a dedicated collector following.
Tricks & Tales
Yuzo Koshiro, founder of Ancient, composed all the music for Beyond Oasis using the Mega Drive's Yamaha YM2612 FM synthesis chip — and specifically avoided PCM sample data to stay purely within the chip's capabilities, achieving a warmth and depth that many listeners consider the finest FM soundtrack ever produced for the hardware. A sequel, Beyond Oasis 2 (Legend of Oasis), was released for Sega Saturn in 1996. The sprite animations, particularly Ali's running cycle, were widely praised as among the most fluid on the Mega Drive.
