Ninja Spirit

最後の忍道 NINJA SPIRIT

Arcade original: 1988. PC Engine port: 1990.

Japan: July 6, 1990 · Dev: Irem

About this game

Originally an arcade game by Irem in 1988, Ninja Spirit was ported to the PC Engine in 1990 and became one of the platform's most celebrated action titles. A relentless side-scrolling slasher set in feudal Japan, it followed a ninja's quest for vengeance with a shadow clone system that doubled — then tripled — the player's firepower and created spectacular on-screen chaos. The PC Engine port was widely regarded as the definitive home version.

Key Features

Side-scrolling action in feudal Japan; shadow clone mechanic — collect shadow icons to fight with up to two identical copies of your ninja, multiplying firepower; weapon switching between sword, shurikens, and other ninja tools; scrolling fight sequences and vertical climbing stages; one-hit death mechanics on higher difficulty.

The Story Behind

The PC Engine was home to exceptional arcade ports throughout its lifespan, and Ninja Spirit stood among the finest. Irem — the studio responsible for R-Type — brought the same technical precision to this feudal action game that defined their approach to game design. The shadow clone system anticipated the 'bullet hell' aesthetic of later shooters by flooding the screen with friendly fire instead of enemy projectiles.

Tricks & Tales

The PC Engine version of Ninja Spirit runs at a faster pace than the original arcade — a change that divided fans who preferred the arcade's slightly heavier feel. Both versions are considered definitive by different camps of the retro gaming community. The game's shadow clone system required players to manage the clones' positioning as well as their own, creating a layer of spatial awareness that distinguished top players from casual ones.
