Mega Man 3

ロックマン3 Dr.ワイリーの最期!?

Japan: September 28, 1990 · Dev: Capcom · Music: Yasuaki Fujita

About this game

Released in 1990, Mega Man 3 expanded the Capcom action-platformer formula with the introduction of the slide move, Rush the robot dog, and the mysterious Proto Man. Where Mega Man 2 perfected the template, Mega Man 3 pushed it further with larger, more complex stages and a narrative that — for the first time — began to ask questions about the relationship between Rock, Roll, and the enemies they fight.

Key Features

Slide move — a new defensive ability allowing Mega Man to dodge under enemies and traverse low passages; Rush Coil, Rush Marine, and Rush Jet — three forms of the robot dog companion; eight Robot Masters including Snake Man, Needle Man, and Gemini Man; revisit of eight weakened Robot Masters from Mega Man 2 as mid-game bosses; Proto Man as a recurring rival throughout the game.

The Story Behind

Mega Man 3 arrived under unusual development circumstances — the project was rushed and Capcom later acknowledged the game was released before it was fully finished, resulting in some early bosses that feel easier than later entries. Despite this, it introduced gameplay mechanics — the slide and Rush forms — that became permanent fixtures of the classic Mega Man formula and is remembered for Yasuaki Fujita's soundtrack, frequently cited as the best in the original series.

Tricks & Tales

Mega Man 3's development was notably troubled — Capcom's Keiji Inafune later acknowledged that the team rushed the game to market and considered it incomplete on release. This is reflected in the difficulty imbalance and a final act that critics have noted feels underdeveloped. The game nevertheless sold well and is deeply beloved in the community, partly because Yasuaki Fujita's soundtrack contains some of the most memorable tracks in Famicom gaming history — Top Man and Snake Man's themes in particular.
