About this game
Released in 1994, Live A Live is one of Square's most experimental RPGs — seven self-contained scenarios set across radically different time periods, from prehistoric prehistory to far-future science fiction, each with its own protagonist, gameplay style, and tone. A final arc then reveals how all seven stories connect. Yoko Shimomura's score matched each chapter with a distinct musical identity, producing one of the most varied soundtracks on the Super Famicom. Its Japan-only release left it unknown in the West for nearly three decades.
Key Features
Seven standalone chapters playable in any order, each with different battle systems and protagonist abilities, a grid-based tactical combat system, Yoko Shimomura's genre-spanning score including the legendary 'Megalomania,' and a hidden eighth chapter unlocked after completing all seven scenarios.
The Story Behind
Live A Live was directed by Takashi Tokita, who had worked on Final Fantasy IV. It represented Square's willingness to experiment at the height of its 16-bit creative power, producing a title that defied genre conventions and still feels ahead of its time. The game was finally remade with an HD-2D visual style in 2022 and released worldwide, introducing it to a new generation.
Tricks & Tales
Yoko Shimomura has cited Live A Live as the first large-scale project where she had genuine creative freedom at Square. The final chapter's main theme 'Megalomania' is widely considered one of the finest villain themes in RPG history. The prehistoric chapter contains no dialogue — the story is told entirely through actions, expressions, and sound.
